What is oligospermia? How to treat Oligospermia?
Oligospermia, also known as oligozoospermia, is a sperm abnormality that results in an insufficient concentration of sperm in an ejaculate. This condition impacts male fertility and can decrease a couple’s chances of achieving a pregnancy.
The sperm count abnormality may be isolated or associated with other sperm abnormalities such as
– Asthenospermia (insufficient sperm mobility);
– Teratozoospermia (abnormal spermatozoa present in large quantities).
When these three abnormalities are combined, we can speak of oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia or OATS. It should be noted that when oligospermia is associated with other sperm alterations, the impact on fertility will be greater.

What are the symptoms?
Oligospermia is a condition in which the spermatozoa are unable to circulate properly due to an obstruction that prevents successful ejaculation. In these cases, the sperm count is normal, the problem is that they are unable to leave. Blockage of the ducts or inflammation of the urethra can prevent the sperm from being expelled.
Oligospermia is completely asymptomatic, i.e. it does not cause any symptoms. The only possible manifestation of the anomaly is difficulty conceiving a child.
What are the causes?
The causes of oligospermia can be various:
– Testicular injury (infection, surgery) ;
– Varicocele (dilation of a vein in the spermatic cord);
– Infections (inflammation of the seminal vesicles, obstruction of the vas deferens);
– Genetic abnormality;
– Hormonal insufficiency;
– Exposure to toxic substances (alcohol, tobacco, drugs);
– Pathology affecting the general condition;
– Exposure of the testicles to high temperatures (occupational exposure);
– Certain treatments (chemotherapy for example).
Oligospermia can be obstructive or secretory, congenital (Y chromosome deletion) or have a transient organic cause, for example due to an infection or contact with a reprotoxic product or endocrine disruptor, a drug or radiotherapy treatment. The cause may be recent or ancient and even go back to embryogenesis if the embryo was exposed to endocrine disrupting pollutants via the umbilical cord and/or the placenta. Such disruptors may also be present in breast milk.

What are the treatments for oligospermia? How to treat Oligospermia
Oligospermia, when mild and not accompanied by any other sperm abnormality, is not necessarily an obstacle to fertility, since only one well-formed spermatozoon is needed to fertilize the egg.
However, as a natural treatment for oligospermia, it may be advisable to adopt hygienic and dietary measures to try to improve spermatogenesis:
– stop or at least reduce alcohol, tobacco, caffeine ;
– keep a normal body mass index (between 18 and 25 kg.m-2)
– do sports regularly;
– Ensure a healthy and balanced diet.
