What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate adenoma?
This state is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (or a prostate adenoma) because it refers to the non-malignant growth of prostatic tissue in men from middle age onwards. In a young man, the prostate gland is at an almost undetectable rudimentary stage and spreads across the coating of the urinary tract like a cluster of seeds. However, during puberty, its form begins to change due to the increased production of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone hormones.
Testosterone causes the « seeds », called acini, to germinate and grow. In adult life, due to this growth and proliferation, these small glandular structures can give rise to obstructive symptoms associated with urinary flow disorders.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is one of the most common diseases in men and is considered to be part of the physiological ageing process. The incidence of this disease is 51% in men aged 60 to 69, and between 75% and 90% in octogenarians.
Symptomatology: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Though the definition of BPH encapsulates the enlargement of the prostate and the mechanical obstruction of the flow of urine, a direct relationship between the volume of hyperplasia and the intensity of symptoms is not always present. Very enlarged prostates do not always cause symptoms and other less enlarged organs can be a source of intense discomfort.
The symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can be divided into two categories: obstructive and irritative.
Obstructive symptoms: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
- Weak and/or intermittent flow of urine.
- Decrease in the force and calibre of the urine.
- Feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder.
- Double voiding (urinating for a second time within a period of 2 hours).
- Post-void dribbling.
- Difficulty or delay when initiating urination.
- Urinary retention.
Irritative symptoms: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
- Polyuria, or increased frequency of urination.
- Nocturia, or the need to urinate frequently during the night.
- Sudden urge to urinate.
- Urge urinary incontinence.
Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Early diagnosis of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is essential to avoid complications such as urinary tract infections, damage to the kidneys or bladder, bladder stones and incontinence.
The treatment for BPH will be determined by the potential for the existence of these secondary processes that derive from urinary obstruction, along with the patient’s level of discomfort
Natural treatments: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
However, some people may wish to try natural remedies for BPH. Those wishing to try these remedies should consult a doctor or an integrative medicine physician first, if possible.
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens): Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Saw palmetto is a palm native to the southeastern United States. The extract of this plant is a popular herbal supplement for the treatment of BPH.
It is an inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce the number of estrogen and androgen (DHT) receptors.
Research has linked the daily consumption of saw palmetto extract with a reduction in BPH symptoms. The plant extract likely has this effect because it inhibits the production of DHT, a hormone that may play a role in causing prostate growth rested Source.

Ryegrass pollen (Secale cereal): Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Some people use herbal supplements made from ryegrass pollen to treat BPH symptoms and reduce prostate inflammation.
Cernilton is a common branded ryegrass pollen pharmaceutical. This medication may be an effective trusted Source in slowing or stopping prostate growth.
Ryegrass extract contains substances that can inhibit prostatic cell growth and reduce inflammation, according to older studiesTrusted Source. In turn, this may help improve BPH symptoms, such as frequent urination and nocturia.
However, despite its popularity, contemporary research has not shown Cernilton to influence BPH symptoms in any large-scale scientific studies. Therefore, further research is necessary to establish the efficacy of this natural remedy.
Stinging nettle: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Stinging nettle contains similar antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds as pygeum and saw palmetto. In fact, natural treatments for various urinary disorders often use nettle root in combination with saw palmetto.
Medical treatment: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
In patients with mild or moderate symptoms, a pharmacological treatment can be administered that is based on alpha-blockers and alpha-reductase inhibitors, which can help to improve urinary flow. The former reduces the tension of the muscle cells inside the prostate, helping the patient to empty their bladder more effectively and comfortably. The latter reduces the size of the prostate, which improves the quality of urination.
Green tea: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Green tea contains high levels of antioxidants, some of which research has shown to enhance the immune system and potentially slow the growth of benign prostate cells.
However, it is important to keep in mind that green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine can stimulate the bladder and cause a sudden urge to urinate, potentially worsening BPH symptoms.

7. Zinc: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Estrogen inhibits the uptake of zinc in the intestines. As a person’s estrogen levels increase with age, their intake of zinc decreases.
Taking zinc supplements or increasing the dietary intake of zinc can lower a person’s risk of having a zinc deficiency. Zinc can also decrease the production of DHT and inhibit this androgen from binding to receptors, potentially reducing BPH symptoms.
Poultry, seafood, and several seeds and nuts, such as sesame and pumpkin seeds, contain zinc.
Soy: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
Soy is an inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase and a low potency estrogen. It may block the receptor sites that the stronger estrogens use to increase the accumulation of DHT.
Surgical treatment: Prostate adenoma natural treatment
For patients who have used medication without success, the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can be alleviated through surgery.
