Definition of Cytomegalovirus: Cytomegalovirus Natural Treatment
CMV is a mild viral disease in people who have a good defence. The virus is from the family of herpesviruses (Herpesviridae) cold sore, genital herpes or chickenpox. Cytomegalovirus infection is most often mild. It is a virus generally responsible for few symptoms in individuals with an effective immune system, responsible for fatigue or other weak and uncharacteristic symptoms such as pain or fever, but it can be serious in immunocompromised people or in pregnant women. The incubation is 20 to 40 days on average but it is very variable.

What is a Cytomegalovirus infection?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a viral infection that can affect a single part of the body, such as the eyes, or spread throughout the body. Before the availability of ART (antiretroviral therapy), it was not uncommon for people with AIDS to develop a CMV infection
Cytomegalovirus symptoms: Cytomegalovirus Natural Treatment
Sometimes, the affected individual may present with fever, and diffuse pain. In the HIV patient, on the other hand, it is a potentially serious infection often manifested by damage to the retina, and inflammation at the digestive or neurological level.
Causes of Cytomegalovirus contamination
Cytomegalovirus is a virus from the herpesvirus family (Herpesviridae). Its contamination is by contact with an infected fluid: saliva, tears, blood, urine, or even genital secretions. But also by the projections during the cough. This virus most often occurs during childhood. This disease is common in HIV-positive people in the advanced stages of the disease. Very often in individuals with no other pathology, the infection caused by this virus goes unnoticed or simply manifests as fatigue. Contamination is mainly due to saliva and urine. It can also be done by intimate secretions and tears.
How do you know if you have had cytomegalovirus?
To detect the presence of CMV, the doctor orders a blood test. The examination then consists of taking a blood sample from a vein, usually at the elbow crease. The analysis laboratory then seeks to identify the presence of the virus (and quantify it) or anti-CMV antibodies.
Cytomegalovirus and pregnancy
Cytomegalovirus infection is a viral disease that can have serious consequences if it occurs during pregnancy. Indeed, if the disease affects the fetus, many sequelae are possible ranging from psychomotor retardation, hearing sequelae, and growth retardation. In some cases, in utero death may occur. According to the High Council for Public Health, “most asymptomatic infected newborns at birth will not develop a disability, only 10% may develop deafness until the age of 5”.
The rate of transmission increases with the term, but sequelae are more severe if transmitted during the first trimester. This is why it is important to confirm the infection in the mother and to estimate its age. For this, several biological examinations are possible.
Cytomegalovirus and pregnancy: what are the risks for the baby?
The most frequent cause of congenital infection, the cytomegalovirus (CMV) can cause heavy sequelae in the unborn baby.
To avoid CMV infection, do not:
kiss the child on the mouth
taste on your plate, finish your dish
suck the baby’s pacifier
kiss a crying baby on the cheeks
aspirate the nose of a baby with a cold without precautions (you must use handkerchiefs in particular and wash your hands)
take a bath with a baby who is likely to urinate in it
NB: You must wash your hands after touching the toys, clothes wet with urine
SeroDiagnosis
Serology is the study of sera to detect changes in them caused by disease. Cytomegalovirus is detectable through blood serology where the presence of antibodies specific to this virus is demonstrated. It is a virus from the family of herpes viruses that can remain in a latent state in the body and develop symptoms mainly in immunocompromised people, whose defences are weakened.
IGG rate
Serology measures anti-CMV IgG and IgM levels. The presence of IgC alone, regardless of the disease, always reflects an old infection. “On the other hand, when there are only IgMs, it is a recent or ongoing infection”, reports Dr Philippe Mironneau. In this case, an “Anti-CMV IgG Avidity Measurement Test” must be performed, which will allow the start of the infection to be dated. Currently, no treatment is available either prenatally or for asymptomatic newborns.
Medical treatment
There is no vaccine against CMV infection and no medical treatment for cytomegalovirus infection. The standard treatment uses antivirals that can cause fetal malformations. These are phosphonoformic acid (Foscarnet) and DHPG. For pregnant women, prevention is therefore essential: washing your hands frequently, not tasting your baby’s spoon, etc.
